Why this matters

The leading cause of death in women is still the least understood.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women worldwide. Yet for decades it has been studied, diagnosed and treated as if the typical patient were a man — and women have paid for that gap in missed diagnoses and lost lives.

Under-recognised

Women are more likely than men to have heart disease missed or diagnosed late, partly because their symptoms can differ from the "classic" pattern medicine was trained to expect.

Under-researched

Women remain under-represented in cardiovascular clinical trials, so much of the evidence that guides treatment was never built around them.

Unequally served

The burden falls hardest on the countries and communities with the fewest cardiologists, the least screening and the weakest access to care — exactly where the Foundation directs its work.

Risk changes across a woman's life — from pregnancy to the years after menopause, each stage carries its own signals. That is why we care for women's cardiovascular health at all stages of life.

About Us

Who we are, and why we exist.

The Foundation

An international foundation built around one purpose.

The International Foundation for Women's Cardiovascular Health exists to promote cardiovascular health in women — and to change the fact that the leading cause of death in women remains under-recognised, under-researched and unequally treated across the world.

We work to prevent, diagnose and manage all forms of cardiovascular disease in women; to promote and support research and teaching in the field; and to assist those delivering cardiovascular care, education and research for women in the countries and populations most in need.

The Foundation is led by an international Executive Committee of cardiologists, surgeons and clinicians.

What the Foundation exists to do.

  • i.
Promote cardiovascular health in womenThe purpose that sits behind everything else the Foundation does.

Prevent, diagnose and manage CVDAll forms and types of cardiovascular disease in women, including hypertension and its associated risk factors, in the areas, countries and populations in need of such services.
  • iii.

  • iv.
Promote and support researchIn the prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease in women.
  • v.
Promote education and teachingBuilding knowledge and clinical capability in the fields above.
  • vi.
Assist those already doing the workSupporting all those actively engaged in cardiovascular healthcare services for women — in teaching, education and research — in countries and areas in need of such services.
Education & Training

Building knowledge, everywhere it's needed.

Our commitment

Teaching the next generation of heart care.

Knowledge saves lives only when it reaches the people who deliver care. The Foundation promotes education and teaching in women's cardiovascular health with a deliberate focus on the areas, countries and populations most in need of such services — and its education and training work is built around three commitments.

  • i.
Clinical training and fellowshipsSupporting the training of clinicians in the prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease in women, with priority for those working where such expertise is scarce.
  • ii.
Teaching and resourcesDeveloping teaching, courses and guidance that bring current knowledge on women's cardiovascular health to those who need it, wherever they practise.
  • iii.
Support for educatorsAssisting those already teaching and training in women's cardiovascular healthcare in under-served countries and areas, so that their work can reach further.
